Stuart Riley

Meet Stuart

Stuart Riley was born in Manchester and started cello lessons at the age of eight. He has lived in Birmingham, Newcastle, London, Leeds and Bristol and has studied with some of the UK’s top players, including Duncan McTier, John Tattersdill, Di Milner and Mike Calder. In the UK he has worked with the Hallé Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Welsh National Opera, Opera North and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. In Australia he has worked with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and the Sydney, Tasmanian and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras, among many others. He moved to Melbourne in 1999.

Stuart first worked with Orchestra Victoria in 2001, and has been a regular with the company for 16 years. He accepted a permanent position with the orchestra in 2017. He enjoys an eclectic mix of music from Bach to bluegrass, ballet, opera, orchestral and chamber music.

Stuart began to play the cello because his primary school got 2 half-sized cellos and “the music teacher went outside one lunchtime and picked the two tallest boys she could find”.
