Complete the surveyIan Potter State Theatre Seating
Premium+ Reserve: the finest seats in the theatre, offering the most sought-after views from the centre of the front Dress Circle. These seats provide an exceptional perspective of the performance and are available in very limited numbers.
Premium Reserve: centrally positioned seats in high demand that have excellent views.
A-Reserve: excellent seats that offer clear and unrestricted views.
B-Reserve: very good seats located further from the stage. Some seats may have minor limitations of the extreme sides of the stage, though the performance remains clearly visible.
C-Reserve: good-value seats located further to the side or rear of the auditorium. Patrons may miss some action or staging details at the outer edges of the performance area.
D-Reserve: seats located in the rear balcony or at the sides of the auditorium. These seats may have restricted views of sections of the stage and some production elements, with a greater impact on sightlines than C-Reserve seating.
E-Reserve: the most economical seats in the theatre, located furthest from the stage. These seats have the most restricted sightlines and patrons may miss a portion of action occurring at the sides of the stage or certain production elements.
Melbourne Season Package FAQ
Why has my Principal Package seat changed since 2023?
As part of the Ian Potter State Theatre redevelopment, the auditorium has been reconfigured to improve accessibility, including new aisles, additional wheelchair-accessible seating spaces and other theatre upgrades. As a result, some subscribers may notice changes to their row letter or seat number.
Why is my seat number different?
The renovated Ian Potter State Theatre features a new seat numbering system. Seat numbers are now centred to seats 30 and 31 in the Stalls, and between seats 29 and 30 in the Dress Circle and Balcony.
This means your new seat may not correspond with your previous seat number, and some seat numbers used before the redevelopment no longer exist. We know how important your seat is. While your row letter or seat number may have changed, we’ve carefully allocated the closest possible equivalent to your previous seating position wherever possible.
Can I request a Principal Package seat change or upgrade?
Yes. You’re invited to attend our Welcome Home Event, where you can view your allocated seat and explore the renovated theatre.
If you’d like to request a seat change or upgrade, please complete the seat change request form by Friday 28 August.
Requests will be reviewed after the Welcome Home Event and accommodated where possible. Your seat will remain held while we assess your request.
Please note: once a seat change or upgrade has been accepted, it cannot be reversed.
My seating reserve has changed and I would like to request a different reserve?
If your seating reserve has changed and you’d like to explore other options, please complete the seat change request form by Friday 28 August.
Requests will be reviewed after the Welcome Home Event and accommodated where possible. If we’re unable to offer your preferred reserve, we’ll work with you to find the best available alternative.
I have new accessibility needs. Can I request a change to my Principal Package seats?
Yes. We are committed to ensuring our performances are accessible and welcoming for all patrons. If your accessibility needs have changed, please let us know by completing our seat change request form and provide as much detail as possible so we can understand how we can best support you.
If you would prefer to discuss your accessibility needs with a member of our Customer Experience Team, call 1300 369 741 or visit our contact page.
Can I change my concession type or the number of seats in my Principal Package?
Yes. If your circumstances have changed and you need to update your concession type or the number of seats in your Principal Package, please submit a seat change request form by Friday 28 August and provide details of the changes you’d like to make.
*Why does my Principal Package not include every ballet?
Due to scheduling constraints, we’re not able to include every ballet in every Principal Package. If your package does not include a particular ballet, you can purchase subscriber-rate tickets for an available performance date and time that suits you.
Additional tickets and exchanges are subject to availability, and your usual subscriber seats may not be available. Additional tickets and exchanges will be available from Monday 12 October.
I'm a 2023 Principal Package subscriber who didn't subscribe at the Regent. Do I still have a seat?
Yes. 2023 Principal Package subscribers who did not subscribe at the Regent Theatre still have an allocated seat held for the 2027 season.
I joined as a Principal Package subscriber at the Regent Theatre. How is my seat being decided?
If you joined us at the Regent Theatre and did not previously hold a Principal Package at the Ian Potter State Theatre, we have allocated a seat for you based on your current price reserve.
Why might my Principal Package seat have changed?
As part of the Ian Potter State Theatre, new aisles have been added to the Stalls and Circle, along with additional wheelchair-accessible spaces to improve accessibility for all patrons. These changes have resulted in some adjustments to the seating configuration, including the row letters and seat numbering throughout the auditorium. We know how important your seat is, and we’re carefully reviewing the new seating to ensure you’re allocated to the closest possible match to the seat you held before the venue closure.
When will I find out my allocated Principal Package seat?
We'll be in touch with your allocated seat by email from mid-July 2026.
Will my memorial plaque still exist, and will it remain on the same seat number?
Yes. Existing seat dedications will continue, with the end date extended by three years to account for the theatre closure since March 2024.
When the Ian Potter State Theatre opens in October 2026, most dedications will appear in their original or very similar locations on new seats, with the same plaque wording, for the remainder of the 25-year dedication period.
Arts Centre Melbourne’s Seat Dedications team has contacted dedicators whose seat numbers have changed. Including those whose original seat no longer exists in the new layout. If you have a seat dedication and have not heard from the team, please contact [email protected] for further information.
Why have the Ian Potter State Theatre's physical seats been replaced?
After 40 forty years of use, the original velvet seats in the Ian Potter State Theatre were showing signs of wear and had reached the end of their life. The new seats honour John Truscott’s original design and aesthetic, while providing improved accessibility, comfort and materials that better support the acoustics of the auditorium.
When does the 2027 season go on sale for subscribers, and how do I renew?
The 2027 season will be announced on Tuesday 1 September 2026, with Melbourne Principal Packages on sale from Wednesday 9 September 2026.
To keep your package and allocated seat for 2027, you’ll need to renew by Friday 2 October 2026.
We’ll send you everything you need to renew by email, or by post if you’ve chosen to receive the Season brochure by mail. This will include your allocated seat details and renewal instructions.

What priority access do Principal Package subscribers receive?
As a Principal Package subscriber, you have priority access to renew your package and secure your seat before Create Your Own Packages and single tickets going on sale to the general public.
Which Season Package is right for me?
A Principal Package usually includes all ballets in a season on a fixed day and time, allowing you to keep the same seats year after year. It offers the best per-ticket price if you want to see every ballet, along with priority access to renew and book.
A Create Your Own Package offers more flexibility, allowing you to choose three or more ballets on the dates that suit you. Create Your Own Package holders also receive early access to book before general ticket sales and enjoy discounts compared with single tickets.
Both Principal Package and Create Your Own Package holders receive subscriber benefits, including fee-free exchanges (subject to the Exchange Policy) and special offers from our partners.
How do I request a season brochure?
To receive a copy of the 2027 brochure in the mail, please submit a request here. A digital copy of our Season brochure will be available on our website from Tuesday 1 September.
When will I receive my Season Package tickets?
Delivery times vary depending on whether you receive your tickets digitally by email or as printed tickets by post. Please visit our ticketing page for the latest delivery information.
Please note that if you have purchased a concession ticket, your tickets will not be sent until valid proof of concession has been received via email by our customer experience team. Please contact our Customer Experience Team if you cannot email your proof of concession.
