Meet Matt

Brisbane-born violinist Matt Hassall began violin, piano and trombone lessons at primary school and went on to play with the Queensland Youth Orchestra. He studied with Patricia Pollett at the University of Queensland, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree, performance honours and then a Bachelor of Education. After joining Orchestra Victoria (then the State Orchestra of Victoria) 24 years ago, he continued private studies with Nathan Gutmann in Melbourne. He has performed with the Queensland Symphony, Philharmonic, and Pops Orchestras and, having lived in Switzerland, the St Gallen Symphony Orchestra, the Luzern Symphony Orchestra and the 21st Century Orchestra. He was the concertmaster for many productions with The Production Company (through Orchestra Victoria) as well as for the national tour of West Side Story in 2010, the Melbourne season of Les Misérables in 2014 and Ladies In Black with the Melbourne Theatre Company . His advice to aspiring musicians? “It’s not all about you.”

Matt loves to go fishing when he gets the chance, “but no one seems to believe that till they see the photos.”
