Nijinsky

A ballet by John Neumeier

Acclaimed narrative ballet choreographer John Neumeier examines the extraordinary rise and fall of dancer and choreographer, Vaslav Nijinsky. Centred around the famed artist's final public performance, Nijinsky offers The Australian Ballet's artists the opportunity to shine in the dramatic and sensational choreography from Neumeier. We last performed Nijinsky in 2016 and we are delighted to be bringing this expressive and emotive piece of theatre back to the stage in 2025.

If you liked Murphy, you'll love Nijinsky.

Carmen

Johan Inger

Johan Inger’s contemporary retelling of Prosper Mérimée’s 1845 novella is a darkly compelling story of the dangerously seductive Carmen, whose love affair with Don José ends in brutal tragedy. In 2024, The Australian Ballet worked closely with Inger to perform the story that flips the switch on the classic narrative, giving new perspective and gritty realism to the tale. After rave reviews in Sydney, Carmen will bring the sultry Spanish heat to Melbourne and Canberra in 2025 and create a new legion of adoring fans.

Manon

Sir Kenneth MacMillan

Sir Kenneth Macmillan’s tragic romance will transport you from the echelons of high society 18th-century Paris to the gritty streets of New Orleans. Adapted from of Abbé Prévost’s 1731 novel, Manon includes some of the most coveted pas de deux in ballet as the dancers weave the story of the young girl forced to choose between true love or a life of lavish splendour.

If you liked Anna Karenina, you'll love Manon.

The Sleeping Beauty

David McAllister

Former Artistic Director David McAllister created the opulent production of The Sleeping Beauty in 2015, and our audiences and dancers have loved it ever since. Featuring a classic tale of good versus evil and brimming with spectacular costumes, extravagant designs and heavy sprinkling of production magic, The Sleeping Beauty is your ticket into fairyland.

Blake Works VI (The Barre Project)

William Forsythe

The Barre Project was conceived at the height of the pandemic as an homage to the legions of dancers who, while holding on to any available piece of domestic furniture, attempted to sustain their professional abilities with at-home barre exercises. The project’s choreography contains no traditional arrangement of academic barre sequences. Rather, it is a rigorous display of the winding and unwinding kinetic logic that underlies the most fundamental elements of classical ballet’s vocabulary.

Glass Pieces

Jerome Robbins

Known for his evocative style, Jerome Robbins spoke his truth through his ballets and gained worldwide recognition for his now-iconic choreography on the Broadway musicals West Side Story and Fiddler on the Roof. Glass Pieces is a genre-defying work that extends across urban movement to traditional ballet, taking inspiration from New York City, the city that never sleeps, with its electrifying pace.
