  • Class Types

    Ballet

In Ballet you’ll take class in the studios used by the dancers of The Australian Ballet, accompanied by live piano. Class will start at the barre and will progress slowly into exercises in the centre of the room (without a barre), including port de bras, travelling exercises and petit allegro (small jumps).

Please also note that The Australian Ballet does not offer pointe work classes and that all Ballet and Repertoire Classes are designed for ballet flats only.

    Class levels:

Beginner – Adults over 18 years of age with zero or little ballet-class experience

This class is for you if you have never done ballet before, or have only attended a small number of classes. This is a fun, step-by-step guide that will help to improve your posture, co-ordination and strength enabling you to move into one of our more advanced classes.

Level 1 – Adults over 18 years of age with limited ballet-class experience

This class is for you if you have participated in ballet classes before and are familiar with the basic positions of the arms and feet. The main focus will be on developing your strength and co-ordination at the barre so that you can advance into centre work. Each week will build on the previous week to refamiliarise you with the basics of classical ballet.

Level 2 – Adults over 18 years of age with previous ballet-class experience

This class is for you if you have participated in a series of ballet classes recently and are confident with pliés, tendus, grand battements, ronds de jambs and pirouettes. Classes will focus on technique in a fun environment. Each week will build on the previous week and combine strength, correct body alignment, flexibility, coordination and rhythm.

Level 3 – Adults over 18 years of age regularly attending ballet class

This class is for you if you’ve completed a course in Adult Ballet recently and have a solid foundation in classical technique. Class will move at a quicker pace and include longer exercises in the centre. Musicality will be refined and you’ll be challenged to develop the lyricism of your dancing.

    Please note:

    • Ballet shoes are recommended but socks are also suitable
    • No late admittance - please arrive at least 10 minutes before class
    • We reccommend bringing a small towel and a water bottle

    Repertoire

In our repertoire classes, you get to learn the most famous steps and sequences from the most loved ballets; think Swan Lake, La Bayadere, The Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote. After having watched these famous enchainement, this is your chance to learn them directly from dancers who have performed the roles. You’ll be learning both the technique required to perform these steps but also the stagecraft involved in communicating the story to an audience.

It is a pre-requisite that you have completed either a level two or three class

    Pilates

Build a strong, stable, supple body in Pilates mat classes, taught by former dancers of The Australian Ballet. Using the body’s own resistance, these strength and conditioning exercises are designed to improve circulation, breathing, posture, and body awareness. You’ll be walking taller and feeling stronger in no time.

    Please note:

    • No late admittance - please arrive at least 10 minutes before class
    • These classes are suitable for everyone from beginners to advanced practitioners
    • Mats will be provided (please do not bring your own) but please bring a small towel and a water bottle
    • Pilates classes are the perfect complement to the Adult Ballet Classes: they build optimal muscle balance for ballet technique
    • To participate in these classes, you must be 18 years or older

    Yoga

In this type of Yoga, movement is aligned and linked with the breath so that you move with each inhale and exhale, and there is a dynamic flow from posture to posture. Taught by qualified and experienced teachers, these classes will help develop strength, balance, co-ordination, and flexibility. All classes will include breath technique, sun salutations, upper-body strengthening, standing poses, floor poses, core work, cooling-down poses and guided relaxation. The dynamic nature of this technique makes it more physically demanding, so expect to work hard.

    Please note:

    • No late admittance - please arrive at least 10 minutes before class
    • This class is open to all levels; however, if you’re brand-new to yoga please let the teacher know before class
    • Mats will be provided (please do not bring your own) but please bring a small towel and a water bottle
    • To participate in these classes, you must be 18 years or older

    Broadway

Broadway Dance is a fun fusion of ballet, jazz and modern dance styles with theatrical storytelling (think Chicago or Moulin Rouge). Classes progress from week to week. We recommend that participants in this class have attended Broadway, jazz, or contemporary classes before – they're not suitable for absolute beginners.

    Please note:

    • No late admittance - please arrive at least 10 minutes before class
    • Please wear jazz shoes or light running shoes
    • Please bring a small towel and a water bottle
    • To participate in these classes, you must be 18 years or older
