  • Class Types

In Ballet you’ll take class in the studios used by the dancers of The Australian Ballet, accompanied by live piano. Class will start at the barre and will progress slowly into exercises in the centre of the room (without a barre). Please also note that The Australian Ballet does not offer pointe work classes and that all Ballet and Repertoire Classes are designed for ballet flats only.

Beginner – Adults over 18 years of age with zero or little ballet experience

This class is for you if you have never done ballet before, or have only attended a small number of classes. This is a fun, step-by-step guide that will help to improve your posture, coordination and strength enabling you to move into one of our more advanced classes. To get a solid foundation we recommend you try one of our six-week beginner series. This course will teach you the fundamentals so that you can move up to one of our higher levels.

Level 1 – Adults over 18 years of age with limited ballet-class experience

This class is for you if you have participated in ballet classes before and are familiar with the basic positions of the arms and feet. The main focus will be on developing your strength and coordination at the barre so that you can advance into centre work. Each week will build on the previous week to re-familiarise you with the basics of classical ballet.

Level 2 – Adults over 18 years of age with previous ballet-class experience

This class is for you if you have participated in a series of ballet classes recently and are confident with pliés, tendus, grand battements, ronds de jambs and pirouettes. Classes will focus on technique in a fun environment. Each week will build on the previous week and combine strength, correct body alignment, flexibility, coordination and rhythm.

Level 3 – Adults over 18 years of age regularly attending ballet class

This class is for you if you have a solid foundation in classical technique. Class will move at a quicker pace and include longer exercises in the centre. Musicality will be refined and you’ll be challenged to develop the lyricism of your dancing.

In our repertoire classes, you get to learn the most famous steps and sequences from the most loved ballets; think Swan Lake, La Bayadere, The Sleeping Beauty and Don Quixote. This is your chance to learn them directly from dancers who have performed the roles. You’ll be learning both the technique required to perform these steps but also the stagecraft involved in communicating the story to an audience.  It is a prerequisite that you have completed either level two or three to take this class.

    Please note:

    • Ballet shoes are recommended but socks are also suitable for all classes
    • No late admittance - please arrive at least 10 minutes before class
    • We recommend bringing a small towel and a water bottle

    Contemporary Ballet

A modern take on a traditional ballet class, Contemporary Ballet concentrates more on individual expressiveness instead of the precision of movements. You’ll use classical ballet technique but will use a greater range of movement of the upper body as opposed to the defined body lines found in traditional, classical ballet. You’ll work through exercises at the barre, followed by exercises in the centre that develop and use a more fluid approach to dance; instead of ‘pulling up’ as you’ll establish ‘grounding’ that will allow you to work with principals of counter balance. This class will be set to recorded, contemporary music.

    Please note:

    • Ballet shoes are recommended but socks are also suitable
    • No late admittance - please arrive at least 10 minutes before class
    • We recommend bringing a small towel and a water bottle
