Synopsis
Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux
In 1953, a piece of music Tchaikovsky composed for Swan Lake, thought lost, was discovered in the archives of the Bolshoi Ballet. The Russian choreographer George Balanchine, who during his time at New York City Ballet revolutionised classical ballet, had trained at the Imperial School and revered Tchaikovsky; he gained permission to use the rediscovered music for this piece. Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, with its lyrical duet and delicate female variation, its spectacular jumps and fish dives, is a tribute to the era of Russian ballet when Tchaikovsky and the choreographer Marius Petipa were at their height; but it also has the speed and attack, the giddying lifts and plunges that gave Balanchine’s choreography an edge of risk and modernity.
Chrysalis
A rush of dancers surge, splinter and reunite in this dynamic new work by Stephanie Lake. Precise, quirky details collide with wildness, releasing into duets and trios that unravel. Part herd, part machine, the dancers slip between cooperation and conflict, propelled by the rhythms of Robin Fox’s new score. Lake’s sweeping choreography is at its most sharp, fast and fiercely alive as dancers give in to the irresistible momentum ultimately driving towards escape.
We Dance
Sandra Parker’s new commission, We Dance, is inspired by the collective strength of people moving and being together. A recognition of dance as a powerful, defiant and rebellious force, Parker’s rigorous choreographic approach is accompanied by Emily Collett’s ‘everyday’ styled costumes and supported by Lawrence’s Harvey’s score.
The Nutcracker Act II
On Christmas Eve, Clara receives an enchanted Nutcracker doll from her Uncle Drosselmeyer. As midnight approaches, Clara’s world transforms into a magical fairy tale. Suddenly, the Nutcracker doll comes to life and battles the wicked Mouse King. Brave and determined, Clara helps the Nutcracker defeat the Mouse King and in a flash of light, the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince. Guided by the Prince, Clara and Drosselmeyer embark on a mystical journey through a winter wonderland and arrive at the Kingdom of Sweets, ruled by the graceful Sugar Plum Fairy.
And this is where our story begins…
Greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy, Clara, Drosselmeyer and the Nutcracker Prince enter the magical realm of the Kingdom of Sweets. The Nutcracker Prince recounts how Clara’s bravery and kindness helped him triumph over the Mouse King. In gratitude for her courageous act, the Sugar Plum Fairy presents Clara with a piece of her necklace.
With a joyful flourish, she invites everyone in the kingdom to join in a royal celebration. All the people of the Kingdom of Sweets dance in Clara’s honour, culminating in a breathtaking finale performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince.
The celebration continues well into the night, and Clara’s magical adventure becomes another enchanting chapter in the story of the Kingdom of Sweets.
