External Relations Grants Manager
  • Ideally Melbourne based

We are looking for an exceptional writer and storyteller who can translate The Australian Ballet and Orchestra Victoria’s vision and business objectives into persuasive proposals to secure grants from governments, trusts and foundations. Reporting to the Director of External Relations, the External Relations Grants Manager will play a critical role in maintaining cross-departmental collaboration to procure information and data for funding application submissions and acquittals.

The successful candidate will have a keen eye for detail, project and stakeholder management skills and a proven effectiveness in similar roles. Ability to understand and present financial results, budget information and projects in written communications will be essential in this role. Experience in a not-for-profit organisation is desirable.

Deputy Company Manager
  • Melbourne based, touring role

We’re looking for an energised and solution-oriented individual with a keen attention to detail to join the Company Management Team. Working together with the Company Manager and Assistant Company Manager, the Deputy Company Manager will assist in the forward planning and administration of The Australian Ballet. This involves the coordination of domestic travel and accommodation arrangements for the dancers and touring staff, liaising with theatre personnel and the public in all performance venues, child employment, artist liaison, and general administration for allocated tours.  This is a touring position, involving approximately six months of travel throughout the year divided across all touring activities. 

The preferred candidate will bring experience in theatre administration and touring as well as strong interpersonal skills. Ability to prioritize competing deadlines all while remaining flexible to ever changing business requirements will be essential in this role. Experience using Tessitura is desirable.

Marketing Specialist
  • Melbourne based

We are looking for a dynamic and commercially savvy Marketing Specialist to deliver key campaigns for The Australian Ballet’s mainstage shows and programs.

Representing The Australian Ballet, you will be inspired to deliver creative marketing solutions that support the company’s goals of building new audiences, elevating the brand and delivering world-class ballet experiences to budget.

Reporting to the Marketing Manager, you will implement strategies that promote subscriber loyalty and retention as well as driving end to end campaigns, venue marketing and partnership initiatives to achieve sales targets. This is a full-service, 360 campaign role across digital, print, outdoor and The Australian Ballet’s marketing channels. 

As an integral member of the marketing team, you will be responsible for sales performance and contribute to the wider marketing, customer and publicity strategy to leverage The Australian Ballet brand. 

The right candidate will ideally come from an agency or product marketing background and have strong commercial / campaign skills (2-3 years minimum), a hands-on approach, ‘can do’ attitude and have an acute attention-to-detail to deliver multiple campaigns to deadline and to budget. Outstanding relationship skills, a collaborative spirit and ambition to learn in a dynamic environment are essential. Ability to speak Mandarin is desirable but not required.

Company Pianist

The Australian Ballet is seeking an experienced ballet pianist to join the music team. Applicants must be expert pianists, have considerable experience in playing for professional ballet classes and rehearsals, and a broad knowledge of the classical ballet repertoire. This is a touring position.

Auditions will be held in January 2019, (Date to be confirmed). Candidates may audition live, or via Skype (or similar technology) or via recording. Salary level will depend on the experience and capacities of the candidate. Repertoire for the audition will be sent upon application.

Work experience


The Australian Ballet offers five work experience placements in administration to Year 10 school students each year. Students get the opportunity to assist a range of departments at the head office in Melbourne, including company management, customer services, wardrobe, and marketing, as well as observing dancers in rehearsals and class. Due to the popularity of the program, places fill very quickly. The 2019 program is fully booked. Bookings for the 2020 work experience program will open in March 2019.

Wardrobe - Production

The Australian Ballet’s wardrobe department caters for secondary and tertiary work-experience placements. There are five one-week placements available per year for Year 10 students. Students should apply during the third term of the year prior to their requested placement. You need to be able to use a domestic sewing machine and be proficient in hand-sewing. Final-year students are given preference, but placements for other year levels can also be arranged, depending on availability. Tertiary students should apply to The Australian Ballet, outlining their course requirements, relevant experience, and why they wish to undertake a placement at The Australian Ballet.
