Your Romantic Winter Itinerary

Because the best date nights are thoughtfully curated, here is our guide to creating the perfect evening before the curtain rises.

Chancery lane

1. Cocktails at Chancery Lane

A date night at the ballet deserves a great opening scene, Chancery Lane lends itself exceptionally well to the task.

In collaboration with The Australian Ballet, Chancery Lane has turned their attention to Verona and created a menu shaped by romance, contrast and intensity.

For a faultless pre-Romeo and Juliet drink, order the Rum Montague: a rich and warm combination of Spiced Rum, Miso Caramel & Coconut cream, and Lapsang Souchong.

Collins street

2. Take a Walk Through the City

Take a stroll towards the Regent Theatre and admire your surroundings. From the sophisticated 'Paris end’ of Collins Street offering designer boutiques and heritage architecture to iconic bookstores and leafy places to catch your breath, Melbourne’s inner-city streets make you feel like a character in a romance novel.

If you are feeling hungry, some nearby favourites include:

  • San Telmo for a romantic steak dinner
  • Pizza pizza pizza for a delicious slice in an intimate setting

For a more access friendly way to get to Regent Theatre, catch one of Melbourne's many trams running on Collins Street. More information here.

3. Arrive Early at Regent Theatre & Capture the Moment

Before the performance begins, take a moment to admire the grand interiors of the  Regent Theatre. With its sweeping staircases, glowing chandeliers and ornate balconies, the Regent is an elegant venue that instantly makes any visit feel special.

4. Settle In and Let the Orchestra Begin

One of the joys of attending the ballet is allowing yourself to fully disconnect from the outside world for a few hours. Turn off your phone, settle into your seat, and let Romeo and Juliet transport you and your date somewhere else entirely.

If you’re not familiar with the story, you can read the synopsis beforehand. Printed and digital options are available throughout the venue, and you can purchase a souvenir program if you’d like to know more and take home a memento. You’ll also have two 20-minute intervals in which to pop into the bar for a glass of champagne or ice cream.

5. End the Evening Slowly

After the final curtain call, take a moment to reflect on the performance. Wander through the city, stop for a late-night dessert or one final drink, and hold onto the atmosphere for just a little longer.

Years later, these evenings will be the ones we remember most.
