Jonathan Lo
Music Director & Chief Conductor
Hong Kong-born Briton Jonathan Lo was appointed Music Director & Chief Conductor at the Australian Ballet in 2023, prior to which he was Music Director of Northern Ballet, and Staff Conductor for the Royal Ballet, Covent Garden. Hailed by Dance Europe as ‘…without doubt, the greatest ballet conductor we have…’, he is sought after globally as a guest conductor with ballet companies including Dutch National Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, Birmingham Royal Ballet and Zurich Ballet. He has an especially close and regular relationship with the Royal Ballet, with whom he has given world-wide cinema broadcasts in some of the Company’s most treasured repertoire such as La Fille mal Gardee, Cinderella and Romeo & Juliet. Away from the classics, Jonathan has premiered works by, and worked with, many of the world’s leading choreographers such as Wheeldon, MacGregor, Marston and van Manen.
Equally prolific on the concert platform, Jonathan has worked with some of the world’s leading orchestras in concerts, broadcasts and recordings, with past and future highlights including the BBC Philharmonic, London Sinfonietta, Philharmonia Zurich, Tokyo City Philharmonic, Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchestra of St Luke. He was Principal Guest Conductor of the Xi’an Symphony Orchestra from 2015 to 2019, and was music director of the Manchester Chamber Choir, with whom he was chorus master for the BBC Proms in 2017 and 2018.
Jonathan read music at the University of Oxford before studying conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music. He was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artist Programme and was a conducting fellow with Rambert Dance Company and Birmingham Royal Ballet.
