Graduating from the University of Western Australia in 2013, Joel received a double honours degree in music and mechanical engineering (acoustics) and the top music prize before undertaking further study at the University of the Arts in Berlin, and later joining Symphony Australia's Conducting Development program. He was invited as an inaugural participant of TSO’s Australian Conducting Academy in 2018 and in 2020 was awarded the Robert and Elizabeth Albert Conducting Fellowship with The Australian Ballet.
Separate to conducting, Joel is an accomplished orchestral percussionist, pianist and music teacher. He was principal percussion and timpani of AYO’s alumni ensemble, has performed frequently with WASO and has been a guest player with ASO, TSO and OV. He has played for The Australian Ballet across multiple seasons as well as working as a repetiteur and accompanist in both classical and musical theatre. Complementing his performance work, Joel has a passion for education, building some of Perth's strongest percussion programs at Trinity College and Hale School.
