Claire Spencer AM is a leading voice in the arts sector, with over 20 years’ experience in the creative industries in Australia and internationally. She has contributed to the success of the world’s most high-profile arts organisations, including the Sydney Opera House.
Claire began her career in finance, working as an auditor with Ernst & Young and Singtel Optus/Cable & Wireless, before moving into the arts in 2003 to join the executive team at the Sydney Opera House. Over more than a decade there, she held the roles of Chief Financial Officer, Chief Information Officer and Chief Operating Officer. In 2014, she was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Arts Centre Melbourne, leading strategy and operations across its seven venues and two state collections. In 2022, she became the first Chief Executive Officer of the Barbican Centre in London, guiding the organisation through its Covid recovery and shaping the values and strategy underpinning its long-term commercial and philanthropic sustainability.
Claire's contribution to the arts and community was recognised in 2020 with her appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia. In 2026, she won the Arts, Culture and Sport category at the Australian Financial Review Women in Leadership Awards. She currently serves on the Live Performance Australia (LPA) Executive Council and the Strong Cultural Infrastructure Expert Panel, contributing to the development of Australia's new National Cultural Policy.
Claire joined The Australian Ballet in 2025, bringing her passion for innovation and collaboration alongside her expertise in business management and sustainable growth to ensure the future of Australia’s national ballet company.
