As one of Australia's most iconic and recognizable buildings, the Sydney Opera House stands as symbol of our creative nation. Passionate about the arts and with a flair for the dramatic, the Sydney Opera House has had a long history of collaboration with The Australian Ballet. To celebrate the Sydney Opera House on their 50th anniversary, we look back at some of our most treasured memories performing at the world heritage venue.

Don Quixote film premiere July 19, 1973

Rudolf Nureyev’s Don Quixote, filmed with dancers from The Australian Ballet premiered on July 19, 1973, at the Sydney Opera House, several months before the official opening. More than 2000 people attended the gala event, paying $50 for a ticket to film and the opportunity to be some of the first audience members inside the building.

The Australian Ballet debuts the full-length production of The Sleeping Beauty. Artistic Director Peggy van Praagh reproduces the original Petipa choreography and Sir Robert Helpmann directs.

David McAllister final performance, 2001

David McAllister gives his farewell performance at the Sydney Opera House in 2001, he would go on to become The Australian Ballet's Artistic Director for the next 20 years.
