The program

The Australian Ballet Education Program provides ballet contemporary dance workshops designed for secondary school students, igniting their creativity and immersing them into the world of ballet and dance. These workshops teach dance and choreographic skills aligning with the Australian Curriculum, including anatomical warmups and safe dance practice, repertoire from our current production, the elements of dance and how to use them to create a dance, and more.  The workshop can be crafted around the students' skill level and will discuss the elements of ballet such as costume design, music, and narrative themes. Max 30 students per workshop.

The program is delivered by The Australian Ballet Education and Outreach team who are specialist dance educators and professional dancers.

Performance

Included in the program is a performance of Wonderland or Balar Diburr. These under 30-minute performances have been created especially for school aged students and are designed for students of all levels of ability and experience to understand and unpack. Students who attend the workshops are invited to enjoy the performance, and if your venue is large enough, other year levels are also welcome to attend.

How does the program work?

Single day program:

The workshop is designed to introduce secondary students into the world of ballet and dance but teaching them dance and choreographic skills aligning with the Australian Curriculum, whilst also unpacking the story of the chosen performance, either Wonderland or Balar Diburr.

Students will then watch the professional dancers from The Australian Ballet Education and Outreach team perform in your school.

Residency program:

We aim to deliver around eight hours of dance workshops throughout the weeklong residency. The same students will take part in the program each day.

Over the course of the week students will learn and develop their dance knowledge and choreographic skills aligning with The Australian Curriculum, whilst also unpacking the theme of the chosen performance.

The students will work with our educators to create their own dance in class to perform on the last day of the program, before The Australian Ballet Education and Outreach team’s performance at the end of the program.
