Aussie Rules fanatic Drew Hedditch on how his competitive nature spurred him into ballet.

When did you start dancing?

I first started with tap dancing at the age of five, I had no intention to even try ballet. I was often hanging around the ballet studio waiting for my sister, who also danced. Around the age of eight I guess competitiveness got the better of me, and I decided that had better feet than my sister, so I started ballet.

When did you join The Australian Ballet?

I trained at the Lisa Clark Dance Centre in Canberra and joined the full-time program at The Australian Ballet School in 2011. After completing the three-year course, I joined The Australian Ballet in 2014 and was promoted to coryphée in 2018.

When did you know you wanted ballet to be your career?

When I was between 15 and 16 years old, I competed in the Youth American Grand Prix and the Royal Academy of Dance Genée International Ballet Competition (now The Fonteyn). Both of these competitions really opened my eyes to a broader world of ballet and was incredibly inspiring. I always had an understanding that I wanted to be a ballet dancer, but it was after this experience that I realised just how much I wanted it and that I would give my all to work towards it.

Do you have a dream role to dance?

I always say that I think this is one of the hardest questions for a dancer to answer. If I had to choose though, I'd say either James in La Sylphide or Lensky in Onegin.

Who was your favourite dancer growing up?

Fred Astaire. When I when I was five I started tap dancing because I wanted to be just like him.

What’s something people may not know about ballet?

I think people are always interested to know that we work on multiple ballets at the same time, not just the show that is currently being performed. When performing at night, we will have been rehearsing the upcoming shows during the day. This is sometimes two or three different ballets in addition to the one being performed on stage. In previous seasons I will have been performing Stephen Baynes Swan Lake at night but rehearsing Graeme Murphy's Swan Lake during the day.

I'm a mad AFL fan and Hawthorn supporter. You'll likely find me at the MCG in my spare time.
