First Nations Dance Education Cadetship 2020

Education | 17 November 2020

In early 2020 we welcomed our inaugural First Nations Education Cadets into The Australian Ballet. The cadet training program is a 12-week placement designed to develop teaching, performing and choreographic skills that can be taken back to the participants’ communities and used within their careers. Through this program strong recruitment partnerships have been made with the specialist Indigenous Arts Colleges – NAISDA and ACPA.

In the first 7 weeks, the cadets joined the team in devising the school and community content and rehearsing new choreography for Wilaygu Ngayinybula//Possum’s two minds by Wiradjuri choreographer and company dancer Ella Havelka. Part of Ella’s process was to incorporate a yarning circle and a workshop on the mental health of Aboriginal young people with specialist Dr Jane Havelka and our own Sam Wright. The cadets returned at the end of the year to complete their placement, contributing to workshop delivery and choreographic projects with primary and secondary students across the country.

The First Nations Education Cadet program is running in 2021 and 2022. If you’d like to know more about applying for a position please email learning@australianballet.com.au
