Synopsis

Marguerite and Armand

Scene I

Parisian courtesan Marguerite Gautier lies on her deathbed gravely ill with tuberculosis. In her delirium she recalls her love affair with a young man named Armand through a series of flashbacks.

Scene II

Marguerite is holding court surrounded by many admirers and suitors. A dashing young man, Armand, enters the room and immediately falls in love with Marguerite who returns his feelings. As her wealthy benefactor leads her away, she throws a white flower to the ground for Armand to pick up symbolising them as a couple.

Scene III

Marguerite has become increasingly ill and deserted her wealthy benefactor to live with Armand in the countryside. Their idyllic existence is interrupted when Armand's father convinces Marguerite to leave. Sworn to secrecy, Marguerite leaves the country house and Armand believes she has abandoned him for another man. Believing she has left him for another man, Armand publicly humiliates Marguerite, breaking her necklace and throwing money in her face.

Scene IV

In the final scene Marguerite lies on her deathbed when Armand enters. He has discovered the truth about why she left him and vows to love her forever. Taking her final breaths, Marguerite dies in the arms of Armand.

The Dream

Scene I

In an enchanted forest, the fairy King and Queen, Oberon and Titania are quarrelling. To spite Titania, Oberon sends his sprite Puck though the forest to fetch a magical flower, which will make someone fall in love with the first living creature they see.

Scene II

Four mortals have also entered the enchanted forest, one pair of happy lovers, Lysander and Hermia and their unhappy friends Helena and Demetrius. Helena is in love with Demetrius, but he desires Hermia. Witnessing this, Oberon sends Puck with the magic flower to charm Demetrius into falling in love with Helena, while he places drops of the flower magic into the sleeping Titania’s eyes.

Scene III

Plotting to have her awaken and see Bottom, an ordinary mortal, Puck transforms Bottom into an ass. On waking, Titania falls hopelessly in love with transformed Bottom.

Scene IV

Meanwhile, Puck has accidentally charmed the wrong man, Lysander, into falling in love with Helena.

Scene V

Oberon commands Puck to create a fog, under cover of which all is put right. Titania is released from her spell and reconciled with Oberon. The mortal lovers are happily paired off and Bottom, restored to human form, goes on his puzzled way.
