Alexander Rodrigues

Robert and Elizabeth Albert Conducting Fellow

Born in Brisbane, Alexander learnt the piano and violin from a young age before learning the oboe, singing and pipe organ. He graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Science (Astrophysics) and Arts (Music). He was the 2018 Tasmanian Young Achiever of the Year Finalist and completed his Master of Music performance degree in orchestral conducting with Johannes Fritzsch at the University of Tasmania that same year.

Alexander’s interest in conducting commenced in 2009 and has seen him conduct the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (in the inaugural Australian Conducting Academy), the Berlin Sinfonietta (Germany) and the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra (Czechia) as part of conducting courses with mentors such as Johannes Wilder, Roberto Paternostro, Luke Dollman and Atso Almila.

A strong supporter of community music, Alexander has conducted various ensembles and orchestras in Brisbane and Tasmania. Prior to joining The Australian Ballet, he was the Assistant Conductor and Program Administrator for the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra. In the second half of 2020 Alexander formed his own chamber orchestra to perform as part of the St Mary’s Cathedral Concert Series which he curated. This ensemble continues to perform at St Mary’s with Alexander conducting.

Alexander enjoys spending time with friends, attending concerts, backyard astronomy and gardening. He hopes to one day see the Aurora Australis.
