STEAMDANCE Resource: case studies

Primary school dances on curricular themes

STEAMDANCE Outcomes

The films show examples that were developed in collaboration with students across 5 weeks of STEAMDANCE workshops. The themes were selected by the school teachers, with students contributing their knowledge and ideas as they researched, physicalised and consolidated their learning. The students were supported to develop and refine their choreography by applying elements of dance, which you will see noted throughout the videos.

Visit our warm-up activities and movement games for ideas for generating movement that can lead to making a dance.

Day and Night

A dance outcome developed over 5 weeks based on the theme "Day and Night".

The class explored how the rotation of the earth causes the apparent rising and falling of the sun, and how the time of day changes the direction and size of shadows.

Forces

A dance outcome developed over 5 weeks based on the theme "Forces".

Students learned that a force can be a push or pull acting on an object as a result of its interaction with another object. Students explored push and pull actions as individuals, with a partner and in groups.

Heat Transfer

A dance outcome developed over 5 weeks based on the theme "Heat Transfer".

The class used movement canons to physicalise heat transferring through a conductor and explored movements to represent materials that are good insulators.

Magnetic Forces

A dance outcome developed over 5 weeks based on the theme "Magnetic Forces".

The students explored the idea of attraction and repulsion to influence their movements, forming patterns and formations based on the properties of magnets.
