Rachel was born in Brisbane where, as a teenager, she befriended fellow violinist Matthew Hassall. Six years later, they travelled to Melbourne and both joined Orchestra Victoria on the very same day in February, 1992. Rachel studied at the Queensland Conservatorium for three years under Elizabeth Morgan, and later spent a year at San Francisco Conservatory with Izadore Tinkleman. For the last eleven years, Rachel has played a violin custom-made by the Italian craftsman Michele Dobner, from Cremona.

Rachel is inspired by her Aunt Glenda, who longed to be a professional pianist. “When she died, she left money for a scholarship in her mother’s name for female pianists or violinists at the Queensland Conservatorium to study overseas. I feel like I have lived out the dream that she had to let go.’’
