Philippa was born in Hay in New South Wales in 1971. Her musical interest began when she was four years old and her father was in a production of Oliver! – she would pick out the melodies on the piano. She began playing the cello at the age of ten, training with Marianne Hunt during high school, Philip Green at the University of Melbourne and Tobias Kühne at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna (from which she obtained a Performance degree). Philippa has performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, including a tour of Japan in the mid-1990s and has been with Orchestra Victoria since 1995. She plays a lovely cello that used to belong to Orchestra Victoria’s former Principal Cellist, Ray Fraser. Her favourite composer is Richard Strauss and her advice to those wishing to pursue a career in music is simple: “Practise and listen.”
